Garden Project Coordinator and Instructor

The Garden Project Coordinator and Instructor is responsible for working with

elementary and high school students to plan and develop a community garden on the

school grounds.

The Garden Project Coordinator and Instructor will:

•Plant, maintain, and harvest produce in the community garden with the students in an after school program.

•Coordinate and facilitate weekly hands-on garden based workshops to students.

•Create activities that help youth connect with their food through gardening.

The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, responsible, and have experience in

various types of farming practices and utilization of garden tools and equipment. A

valid driver’s license is required. Good communication skills and the ability and

interest in working with children and adults from diverse backgrounds and abilities are essential. Basic computer and good organizational skills are a must.

Sankofa Farmers Market Coordinator Job Description

The Sankofa Farmers Market is a weekly farmers market in the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans managed by Sankofa CDC. The market operates every Saturday rain or shine and offers seasonal, locally produced, nutritious produce in an underserved neighborhood that has no supermarket within a 6-mile radius. This market is new to the area and will require a staff person whom can work on their own much of the time while adhering to the organizational written systems.

The successful applicant will be a strong organizer, enjoy working with people of different social and economic backgrounds, a zeal to address problems quickly and directly, be able to assist with new and emerging administrative systems, can meet deadlines and be an excellent communicator.

The Market Coordinator’s main work is to: 1. Bring in a diverse (in age, income and geographic location) group of new shoppers, community partners, and volunteers; 2 Increase the number of farmers and fishers in the Gulf Coast region to become vendors at the market; 3) Maintain an active and up-to-date database system for market vendors; 4) Maintain an active database system for community outreach work and activities; 5) Follow the prescribed logistics systems to direct each market day; 6) Help foster community support for the market; 7) Coordinate volunteer activity on market day; 8) Direct the set up and break down the market Welcome Tent and any affiliated materials and activities each week; 9) Maintain accurate weekly records of market activities and reports.

The Market Coordinator reports directly to the Executive Director of Sankofa CDC. The position is 15 hours weekly, with 7 hours on Saturday, with 8 hours for office/outreach duties during the week. The position is 70% outreach to vendors and community and 30% administrative.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will be an outgoing individual with excellent communication, organizational, and problem solving skills as well as a strong interest in agriculture, community development, and local economies. S/he must be a self-starter, reliable, friendly, motivated, and able to focus on multiple tasks at once. Attention to detail and accuracy of work, ability to work with limited supervision, ability to manage relationships with a diverse population (schools, seniors, farmers, other community members) and establish and maintain successful working relationships with the staff of Sankofa CDC are important. Knowledge of database software programs and computer word processing important. Must have a willingness to work irregular hours and weekends when necessary. Must have a valid driver’s license. Experience coordinating volunteers is a plus. Relevant work experience in the areas of logistics, coordination, management, and administrative tasks or college degree preferred.

Compensation $15.00 an hour
