NPN hosts town hall forum on Orleans Parish Prison expansion

By Aretha Frison, Trumpet Editor

Over 40 people attended Wednesday's night town hall meeting regarding the Orleans Parish Prison expansion, including public officials and community leaders. Many of the attendees were not aware that the jail manages state inmates, how many beds Sheriff Marlin Gusman wants in the jail expansion and how the jail expansion affect their neighborhoods and communities.

"
Many people are in this negative experience (jail) because of a lack of jobs and that is a large response to the crime,” said Senator Cynthia Willard-Lewis during the meeting.

Quick Facts

Who is in our Jail?

Right now, there are approximately 3,500 people in Orleans Parish Prison right now, which amounts to more than 9 people in jail for every 1,000 residents. The national average is less than 3 people in jail for every 1,000 residents.

"If you look at the data, you will see that black men in the system stay twice as long as white men and that is not being very just, " said Lucas Diaz, executive director of Puentes. Our working group has learned a lot and notice that there is a huge disconnect between the criminal justice activists and the public. We need for the public to talk about these complex issues. And for us to have a just government, we need the public’s input."

Of that 3,500, 800 or almost 25 percent are state prisoners who should be housed in state facilities. And, of the remaining 2,700 city prisoners, 80 percent have been charged with a minor or nonviolent offense.

"We have to keep in mind that the jail is about people and we need to build something that is rightly and morally proper for the people," said State Representative Austin Badon. "And we need to work with our families so they don’t have to be involved in the criminal justice system. I am about making sure that our people are responsible and out of the penal system. If we educate our children using a holistic approach, then we won’t have to worry about expanding our prison system."

1st Annual Disco X-Mas Tonight

The What About Us Organization(WAUS) is hosting a Christmas fundraiser!

WAUS creates a safe environment within a devastated community for young people to express themselves, set future goals and have less interaction with law enforcement. WAUS provides innovative solutions to support the future goals of the individuals we serve. They believe that if young people can see themselves in the future, believe in all that it takes to get there, and set realistic goals then they can become whatever they dream to be in life. Their extended vision is to shift perceptions of young people by incorporating literacy and spiritual guidance to shift alienation, violence and silence. And finallly, to create a citywide movement of brave new voices bringing the talent from the devastated communities of New Orleans.

What's a "Twitter?"

AND HOW IT CAN KEEP YOU INFORMED DURING A STORM

Twitter is the newest form of social media that can be set up to send/receive information from the text messaging function of your cell phone at no additional cost. This is why it may be your most useful new communication tool for the upcoming hurricane season.

Here are some important accounts you should follow and receive text updates from to stay informed about the weather as it relates to us:

1. @evacuteer
2. @gohsep
3. @nolanews

Just getting started? Fear not! Here's a simple guide to Twitter:

Get started:

1. Go to twitter.com and click the big green button that says "sign up."

2. Follow steps to create your account.

3. Don't forget to fill out all profile information including a mini-bio, your location and a photo. All of these things can be found in the "settings" tab in the top right corner.

4. Follow people! Start with the three above suggested, and next, of course, you will want to follow @npnnola! Then you can go to our profile and see who we're following. Follow as many or as few people as you want - you can always unfollow them later if you realize that you're not interested in their updates!

5. Update! "Tweet" useful information and updates that you think others will be interested in.
Example of a good tweet: There's going to be a great free music festival going on downtown tonight!
Example of a bad tweet: I'm going to the grocery store

6. Set up your mobile device. iPhone and blackberry have self explanatory applications. If you have any other type of phone, follow these steps:
a. click "settings" in the top right corner
b. click "devices" tab
c. enter and save your mobile number
d. make sure "devices" are on
e. go to the profiles that you want to receive text updates from, click the grey box below their picture and select "device updates - on"

NOTE: THIS SHOULD ONLY BE A SELECT FEW WHO WILL SEND IMPORTANT UPDATES (SUCH AS THE ONES LISTED ABOVE) STANDARD TEXT MESSAGING RATES WILL APPLY - IF YOU HAVE UNLIMITED TEXT MESSAGING, THIS WILL NOT COST ANYTHING.

Glossary of terms:

Tweet - an individual post on twitter
RT - stands for "re-tweet," this is when someone re-posts something you said
@ - this is a 'reply,' placed in front of someones name when you are responding
to one of their posts
# - a hashtag - used to group similar topics together. Ex: #nola means your post
was New Orleans related. Don't overuse this.
